Jaume Plensa and the Saint Jaume bastion

Inaugurated in 2010, the Nomade, a monumental sculpture by the Spanish artist Jaume Plensa, has become an emblematic symbol of Antibes. It is installed on the Saint Jaume bastion

The sculpture blends harmoniously into the maritime landscape, creating a dialogue between contemporary art and the historical heritage of the region.

Jaume Plensa, born in 1955 in Barcelona, is known for his monumental sculptures that explore the relationship between the human body and language. The Nomad illustrates this theme by using letters to form a human figure, symbolizing the universality of language and communication. Visitors can enter the sculpture, offering an immersive experience and direct interaction with the work.

The Bastion Saint-Jaume, where the sculpture is located, is an ancient fortification built in the 17th century to protect the entrance to the port of Antibes. This site has a rich history, having successively housed a Roman temple, a chapel, then a fortified tower. In the 20th century, it was home to the shipyard where Commander Cousteau's famous Calypso was built. After the shipyard ceased operations in 1985, the site was renovated to highlight the fortified remains, providing an ideal location for contemporary works of art.

Go there, the show is definitely worth the detour.
