The Nice Carnival : A Historic and spectacular celebration

The Nice Carnival is one of the oldest and most renowned carnivals in the world. Its origins date back to the 13th century when Charles of Anjou, Count of Provence, first mentioned festivities held before Lent. At the time, locals took advantage of this period to indulge in entertainment before the religious fast.

In 1873, the carnival took on a new dimension with the creation of the *Festival Committee*, which organized the celebrations and introduced the first official floats and parades. It was also around this time that the iconic "King of Carnival" was introduced, a figure that changes themes every year.

Another major milestone in the carnival’s history was the introduction of the *Battle of Flowers* in 1876. Originally, these battles were simple exchanges of flowers between spectators and participants. Today, they have evolved into a grand tradition, with thousands of locally grown flowers—especially mimosa and carnations—tossed to the crowd from beautifully decorated floats.

Each year, the Nice Carnival attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors from around the world, drawn by its illuminated parades, street performances, and lively music. Blending creativity, satire, and a tribute to local traditions, this event continues to dazzle and solidify Nice’s reputation on the global stage.
